Read this! Some Musings re Sydney Botulinum Injections

Botulinum therapy (abbreviated to BoTox) has become ingrained in Sydney society and now it has become an essential part of any beauty routine for many in the city. Still I am often astounded by the plethora of myths which have originated about this procedure. Here I have outlines a few of the more myths that I hear everyday in my work as a doctor at Star Cosmetic Medicine located in Pyrmont, Sydney.

Misconception # 1: BoTox may immobilize all my expressions!

There are sixty or so muscles in the human face. The facial muscles usually function harmoniously, but over a period of time fine lines may start to appear. When an excess of BoTox is used facial muscles can sometimes become less taut. Generally physicians use comparatively low quantities to result in you seeming well rested, but still you will maintain your natural expression.

Indeed a carefully calculated injection of BoTox in the appropriate site means an expressive face is saved whilst the fine lines and wrinkles undergo a softening effect.

Misconception # 2: BoTox is toxic!
Actually there is some truth in this assertion. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the proper scientific nomenclature. In large doses it can end up in a decrease in muscle tone and may even make one really sick.

Pharmacists have a well known expression that states ‘everything is a poison – it all depends on the dose’. A large dosage of any medicine can induce sickness. If you drink too much water it will be fatal.

Misconception # 3: It will sting!
Your hair is larger than the needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine. Numerous patients have stated that the shots are not worse than being bit by bugs. It certainly is not as painful as something like a blood test.

Misconception # 4: BoTox will deaden the sensation in my face!
Not true. BoTox affects the neuromuscular junction, and not on the nerves of sensation. Only the ability to relax muscles is impacted by BoTox injections.

Misconception # 5. Once you begin getting BoTox you have to keep going or else you will have worse wrinkles than ever!
Also untrue.

One treatment will be effective for about three months. Any treatments after the first consultation commonly last a few weeks longer. Gradually as muscle strength builds up again, the wrinkles will eventually reform. But they will certainly be no worse than when you began.

Even if you never had BoTox ever again – those lines will in all likelihood be a little less pronounced than if you hadn’t undergone the treatment. Mainly because your skin has had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
